7 Science Facts That Are Going to Blow Your Mind

Science is definitely not limited to the realms of your textbooks. It is beyond that and sometimes it’s well beyond the universe. There are many scientific facts that are capable of blowing your mind. They might sound pretty avant-garde to you but they are undoubtedly very true indeed. Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. Below we have enlisted 7 science facts that are going to blow your mind.

  • There’s enough DNA in an individual’s body to stretch from our Sun to Pluto and back- seventeen times

The human genome consists of 23 DNA molecules, each of them containing from five thousand to 2.5 million nucleotide pairs. An uncoiled DNA molecule is around 1.7- 8.5 cm long. The human body has around 37 trillion cells. If you can uncoil the DNA encased in each cell and place them end to end, you would get a total length of 2×1014 meters, which should be enough for 17 Pluto roundtrips.

  • The average human body carries 10 times more bacterial cells than human cells

Each of us is a walking Petri-dish. There are ten times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells. But don’t worry about it. This is because most of these bacteria aren’t harmful. In fact, we wouldn’t even survive without them.

  • A photon can take more than 40,000 years to travel from the Sun’s core to its surface. But it will take only 8 mins to reach the surface of the Earth

A photon takes millions of years to wander to the surface of the sun. But then it takes only 8 mins to reach us. So there’s a huge possibility that the light that reaches us from the sun is produced millions of years ago. Isn’t that amazing?

  • Babies have around a hundred more bones than adults

Babies have 300 (approx.) bones at birth. That helps in providing extra flexibility to them. The extra flexibility helps the babies to pass through the birth canal which also helps in rapid growth. Many of these bones fuse together with growth, leaving 206 bones in all.

  • Amazon rainforest produces 20% of Earth’s oxygen

Our atmosphere is roughly made of 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. Amazon rainforest covers a distance of 5.5 million square kilometers (approx). It produces a significant proportion (20%) of Earth’s oxygen on one hand and also absorbs large quantities of CO2 on the other

  • Some metals explode on contact with water

Certain metals like sodium, potassium, rubidium, etc. are so reactive that they explode when they come in contact with water. These metals also oxidize almost instantly when exposed to air.

  • When Helium is cooled to absolute zero, it becomes liquid and exhibits amazing properties

These amazing properties include things like:

  • It can flow against gravity.
  • It can dribble through molecule-thin cracks

In fact, it becomes a super fluid.
