Hello! My name is Shalmalee and I am very excited to help you succeed in Biology! I am originally Indian but grew up in Dubai and have completed my higher education in London and Germany. I am currently starting my PhD at VUmc. My expertise in Biology comes through my Bachelors degree in Biochemistry from Kingston University London and Master's degree in genomic medicine from Imperial College London. I have worked on stem cells and genetic engineering at EMBL Heidelberg. I have previously worked with a company in Germany to help pharmaceutical companies identify novel drug targets. Currently, I am the recipient of the prestigious Marie-Curie PhD fellowship granted by the European Commission, which I will be using to conduct research into disease biomarker and immunology-related topics. I have always loved teaching and simplifying complex biological concepts using the powerful technique of visualisation. Therefore, I mostly concentrate on concept-based learning, eventually leading to learning how to knit various concepts together into answering exam style questions for optimal marks. On a bigger scale, I wish to make Biology easy at school and hopefully inspire my students (and hidden geniuses) to join this exciting and wonderful field to make a significant difference in this world! When I first start with a student, I try to find out their primary points of struggle, including particular chapters, concepts or math related questions. I then make individually-tailored presentations that are short and sweet, have as little words as possible but have more images and diagrams. I then make little worksheets for homework which will only be questions to test taught concepts. One month before the exam I aim to tackle exam style questions with the students.
