I earned a masters in teaching mathematics at the secondary level in 2018, specializing in diversifying instruction to meet diverse learning needs. If you hate math, I'm your teacher. I have an extensive background in art, music, physics and many unusual life experiences that allow me to relate the many ways that math makes life more beautiful, more powerful, and more amazing! Math has a bad reputation but in my experience, the right attitude, the right teacher, and the right applications make all the difference. I teach solving systems of linear equations by racing remote controlled cars, quadratic equations with catapults, statistics with cookie stacking contests, and geometry with patterns and design. Mathematics is the language of the universe, and once you learn to speak it, you will begin to see it everywhere. Becoming better at math won't only raise your grades, either; learning how to use logic, solve problems, balance equations, draw angles and connect ideas will strengthen your mind in general and make you a better thinker overall. Like working out in a gym makes your whole body stronger, practicing mathematics will make your whole brain smarter and more efficient, whether or not you think you'll ever use it in "real life." You don't go to the gym to become an awesome leg-lifter; but strengthening your legs makes you better at everything that uses legs. Likewise, learning math strengthens your brain and makes you better at everything that uses it!
I have a soft spot for people with math anxiety, learning challenges, behavioral issues, and diverse needs. There are many, many ways to teach and learn math, but most schools are limited to a few spread across a large class. In tutoring, I can tailor my teaching to meet your specific needs. Read less

In group settings, I prefer cooperative learning and group work. In individual settings, I enjoy project-based learning that requires direct application of math concepts, like catapults, patterns, designs, video games, art, engineering, history, music and everyday examples.
I begin by assessing what your current needs and strengths are, what style of learning is most effective for you (visual, kinetic, etc), and what your interests are, which I combine to create a custom learning plan. Read less
